CONVERSATIONS

FOR PIANO

FRIDAY 18 NOVEMBER 2022

7PM
NATIONAL LIBRARY OF AUSTRALIA

In 2021, pianist Ronan Apcar recorded and released the unpublished and unheard music of legendary Australian composer and educator Dulcie Holland, that he had discovered in the archives of the National Library of Australia. After its release Dulcie Holland Crescent became an ABC Classic’s featured album. A year on, Ronan returns to the National Library of Australia to perform these works live, paired with compelling pieces by other Australian composers both past and present.

Conversations for Piano is a celebration of the depth and quality of Australian music explored through the works of Dulcie Holland. Apcar presents some of the greatest 20th century Australian piano pieces in Holland’s Sonata for Piano paired with her former mentor Roy Agnew’s Sonata Ballade. Explore the sounds of a British autumn in Holland’s Autumn Piece contrasted against the Australian spring in David John Lang’s magpie-inspired piece, and listen as Rósalind Page’s adventurously ambient and ethereal work is answered by one of Holland’s most delightful yet sophisticated character pieces, Conversation for Piano.

Ronan Apcar is a young and emerging Australian pianist and composer quickly garnering a reputation of versatility, edge, and tenacity. Unafraid to experiment and challenge norms, his experience and fluency across all kinds of music - jazz to the avant-garde, classical to house music - translates into his exciting work as a musician. Described as "a talent far beyond his age" (Limelight Magazine), Apcar is best known for his work in contemporary and new music - particularly by Australian composers. He has performed in concerts, festivals, and both intimate and large-scale venues across Canberra, Sydney and regional NSW.

The performance will be followed by an optional two course dinner in Bookplate, with matched wines from Eden Road Winery, allowing the conversation to continue with Ronan and fellow music enthusiasts.
