The perfect reading nook

August 16, 2017

“I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of any thing than of a book! -- When I have a house of my own, I shall be miserable if I have not an excellent library.”
― Miss Bingley, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

There really is no enjoyment like reading. And in our minds, nothing enhances that enjoyment more than a cosy, comfortable place to curl up.

You don’t need oodles of space for a reading nook. If you look around home, chances are you'll find an empty corner that makes a perfect little spot. Of course, once the weather warms up a bit, there’s nothing to stop you setting up a chair and table outdoors and enjoying a book in the sunshine.

Here are our must-have ingredients for the perfect snuggly spot to devour your book!

1. A comfy chair

How can one escape into another world when one’s behind is not comfortable? Get yourself a cushy and supportive chair – preferably one large enough to accommodate your legs when you feel like getting really snuggly (a chair with a bit of length, or even a day bed, is perfect for this). The one below from Freedom fits the bill.

 Hemmingway Fabric Chaise (Freedom), $1,499.00

2. A good source of light

To prevent eye strain, you need plenty of light to read by. Make sure to position yourself near a good natural light source, or else find yourself a nifty reading lamp. A floor-standing one like the one below can be angled downwards to shine light directly on your page, while an adjustable table lamp perched on an occasional table is another option.

Kenzo Flooor Lamp (Matt Blatt), $259.00

3. A cosy blankie

Apart from adding a bit of zing to your décor (who doesn’t love a throw casually draped over a chair?), you’ll have something to wrap around you to keep those chilly drafts at bay. Try one that’s thick and luscious for extra cosiness.

Horizontal Double Rib Throw (West Elm), $99.00

4. A snuggly cushion

A chair without a cushion is like dancing without music. For extra snuggle factor, try something in a plush finish, like the one below from Bed Bath & Table.

Mongolian Faux Cushion (Bed, Bath & Table), $59.95

5. A small table or butler’s tray

This is essential for storing all those books you’ll be reading, but also serves as a place to rest your hot drink (or glass of wine!) and any other bits and pieces. This option from Freedom is just the thing, but any small table or stand will work.

Dante Butler Tray Table (Freedom), $79.95
