The perfect hot chocolate

“All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn't hurt.” ― Charles M. Schulz

Brr. What a chilly few days it's been! There really is nothing for it but to snuggle up indoors with a good book and a hot chocolate.

Recently, we asked our barista team for their tips for making the perfect hot chocolate. Noted, this method might be a bit more complicated than just adding chocolate powder to microwaved milk. But the log-cabin-esque feel is well worth it!

Happy drinking (and snuggling!)

The chocolate

Good tasting hot chocolate can’t come from bad tasting chocolate. Choose a good quality hot chocolate mix like Mörk (a blend of Venezuelan cocoa beans in varying degrees of dark), or Lindt, depending on what type of chocolate you prefer. Alternatively, you can use shavings of your favourite chocolate. You can even get creative and use your favourite chocolate bar! (Mars Bar hot choc, anyone?)

The milk

Full cream milk will give a result that is not too thick or too thin, while a mixture of cream and milk will enhance the creaminess and richness. Heat these slowly, and be careful not to boil or you might end up with burnt milk! Tip: giving the milk a little whisk at the end will add a bit of barista-worthy frothiness.

The toppings

This is where you can get as creative as you like. A dusting of chocolate, a sprinkle of cinnamon or a handful of marshmallows that melt into a gooey layer? The possibilities are endless.

Extra flavourings

Why not get even more creative by adding a touch of something else to the mix? For example:

  • add a nutty edge with some Frangelico

  • lend a minty touch with a dash of peppermint extract

  • introduce some orangey sweetness with a dash of Grand Marnier or Cointrea

  • up the decadence factor with a squirt of caramel syrup

  1. Heat milk or milk/cream mixture in a saucepan over low heat until it comes to a simmer. Remove from heat.

  2. Add your chocolate of choice and let it sit for 1 minute.

  3. Stir thoroughly until the melted chocolate is completely mixed through. Whisking optional.

  4. Pour into cups and serve with some scrumptious toppings.
