Winter hand care: 4 tips for silky soft hands

“Your hands--they are strangely fair!

O Fair--for the jewels that sparkle there,--

Fair--for the witchery of the spell

That ivory keys alone can tell;

But when their delicate touches rest

Here in my own do I love them best,

As I clasp with eager, acquisitive spans

My glorious treasure of beautiful hands!”

- James Whitcomb Riley

Is winter leaving your hands dry, discoloured and cracked? Dry and chapped hands can be uncomfortable (sometimes even painful), and leave you feeling less than amazing. Here’s 4 tips for keeping your hands in good condition through the biting Canberra winter.

1. Don’t overwash your hands

Washing hands is an essential part of everyday health. However, overwashing can strip your hands of natural oils and leave skin dry, an effect exacerbated by the winter air. To keep hands fresh and free from bacteria, try using an organic hand sanitiser for on-the-go germ-proofing. Nourished Life has some great recommendations.

2. Don a pair of stylish, warm gloves for outdoors

Prevention is better than cure! Keep your hands safe from the biting Canberra chill with a pair of gorgeous gloves. Try a pair with a fur cuff to keep your wrists toasty too, while a pair of quality leather gloves will always be in style.

Try these stylish options:

Basque Glove with Fur Cuff (via Myer), $39.95

Dents Classic Leather Glove in Navy (via Myer), $69.95

Review Cupid’s Bow Gloves, $69.99

3. Choose a gentle handwash over soap

Ordinary bath soaps and harsh, astringent hand washes like those found in restrooms can be incredibly drying and irritating to hands. Sometimes it’s not possible to avoid using them, but where you can, choose a gentle, mild handwash over a harsh soap.

We love Natio Orange Blossom Hand Wash ($8.95 for 250mL), Bondi Wash in Tasmanian Pepper and Lavender ($30.00 for 500mL), and Organic Care Vanilla Shea Hand Wash ($3.75 for 250mL). Bonus: they're all Australian made and cruelty free.

4. Moisturise after hand washing (religiously)

Moisturising is probably the single best defense against dry and chapped hands in winter. These hand cream selections have all been road-tested by us, so you can be assured it‘s worth grabbing a tube to keep in your handbag!

Natio Antioxidant Hand & Nail Cream, $9.95, 100g

If you’re after something light and non-greasy with a medium consistency (not too thick, not too thin), with a clean herbal fragrance, this is the one for you. It contains vitamins A, C and E as well as mandarin and bergamot essential oils and is marked as safe for all skin types.

Sukin Hand & Nail Cream, $9.95 (125mL)

This one comes in both a pump pack and handy tube for carrying in your handbag. It’s got alore vera and vitamin E, and has a vaguely minty scent straight out of the tube which gives way to a delicious, natural essential oil smell. It’s paraben and sulphate free and moisturises really well.

Jergens Hand & Nail Cream (via Priceline), $3.59 (100mL)

It’s hard to believe how good this moisturiser is for the price. It’s quite a rich consistency while being non-greasy, and it smells light and refreshing without being overpowering. It absorbs quickly with no residue and contains vitamins C, E and B5. It also gets great reviews online! Who said beauty had to be expensive?

Crabtree & Evelyn ultra-moisturising hand therapy range, from $12.00 (25g) to $30.00 (70g)

Crabtree & Evelyn have an entire line dedicated to hand care. Gorgeously packaged and featuring a plethora of different scents, there is something to please everyone. All of the hand creams feature macadamia nut oil and shea butter, and are known to absorb well with a silky, luxurious feel. In general, a little seems to go a long way. We tried three different scents, but they have a huge collection that’s well worth investigating. The best part? The stunning packaging makes these ones a treat to carry in your handbag. We loved the Pomegranate Argan & Grapeseed (sweet, spicy and fruity with a hint of citrus) the Pear & Pink Magonlia (smells DELICIOUS, with a fresh, floral and sweet scent which lingers on skin), and the Goatmilk (ideal for sensitive skin, with a fresh herbal “alpine lavender” scent).
