Goodbye winter chill: stay warm in Canberra with a colourful coat

"Here is one of winter’s prettiest fashions—the coloured coat. It is designed to look brilliant against the background of grey winter days and scheduled to travel non-stop into spring’s sunshine."

– The Australian Women's Weekly, 10 June, 1953. Via Trove at the National Library of Australia

In 1953, according to The Australian Women’s Weekly, a chic coat was a colourful one. This gorgeous citron yellow coat in the 10 June 1953 issue features in a fashion spread encouraging women to think beyond the usual black, grey and tweed styles of your standard winter coat.

"Lemon-yellow velour cloth is used for the model above, designed by Alex Maguy. The elegant lines of the coat fall close to the lines of the body by virtue of simple and perfect cut. The coat is finished with a round white pique collar and deep pockets and worn with a tiny white hand banded in lemon.”

It got us thinking here at BOOKPLATE: there’s something to be said for a pop of colour in the dead of Canberra winter.

We’ve rounded up our own selection of beautiful coloured coats to add a little splash of life to your winter wardrobe.

MINKPINK ‘Fearless’ Wool Coat in pink, $179.95 (via The Iconic)

We are loving the gorgeous, gentle peach hue of this MINKPINK coat. The slightly relaxed fit make this coat perfect for layering over a slim fit sweater (it would look chic over black), and the colour is feminine and delicate while also being an unusual choice. Wear it with jeans in a mid-blue wash (like these or these), or over a sweet knit dress with classic black heeled boots (check out these from Diana Ferrari).

Phase Eight 'Bruna' Belted Coat in red, $257.00 (via David Jones)

Wide lapels and a wrap-front design are perfect for keeping out the Canberra wind, while a vibrant red is a classic colour choice. A self-tie accentuates the waist and makes this design elegant and universally flattering. Pair with red lips for extra va-va-voom. (Bonus: it's 50% off!)

Review 'Marian' coat in teal, $349.99

What’s not to love about this gorgeous, richly-hued teal number from Review? A fabulous fit-and-flare design gives it a distinct 50’s vibe (we had to double check it wasn’t straight out of the pages of our 1953 Women’s Weekly!), while a matching detachable fur collar (faux, of course) adds extra warmth and a touch of drama. Perfect to wrap over a slinky dress for a night out, but equally stunning over just about any daytime winter outfit.

Forever New ‘Selena’ Dolly Coat in ‘Windsor Wine’, $129.99

Rich, luxurious and warm are the words that come to mind about this beautiful coat. ‘Windsor Wine’ is the perfect name for it, because it makes us think of delicious mulled wine! Forever New has some beautiful designs this season, and this one is no exception. The double-breasted design with black button detail looks equally good buttoned up, or worn open for a more casual look. Note: if you do plan to button up, the slim fit means it might be a good idea to size up. This coat would look amazing paired with a bag in a soft blue (see this Michael Kors beauty), or even a soft blush (like this one from Sportscraft).

There's a donation bin located at the ANU Food Co-Op (3 Kingsley Street Canberra), or you can comment on the Facebook page or send an email and they will collect the coats from you. We think it's a beautiful way to help the community this winter.
